A new analysis conducted by the Zangador Research Institute has found that the average gender pay gap in Bulgaria stands at approximately 20%. The findings, based on data covering the period 2008–2022, were presented by our Director Professor Stanislav Ivanov during the conference “Pay and Equality in Bulgaria”, organized by the Bulgarian Platform of the European Women’s Lobby.
The study highlights persistent disparities in earnings between men and women across sectors, underscoring the need for stronger policies and coordinated efforts to ensure fair and equal pay. During the event, participants discussed structural factors contributing to the gap, including occupational segregation, unequal career progression opportunities, and the undervaluation of female‑dominated professions.
The conference brought together researchers, policymakers, and civil society representatives to explore solutions and promote gender equality in the Bulgarian labor market. More information about the initiative is available on the Bulgarian Platform of the European Women’s Lobby website
